Building Society Launches Charity Awards 2009

Since 2006, the Society has made a variety of contributions to groups throughout the Bath and North East Somerset area, helping to fund numerous projects for the benefit of the local community.

It is common knowledge within the non-profit sector that in the last year, charitable trusts have seen incoming resources drop dramatically. As a result many trusts and foundations have had no choice but to severely cut expenditure, having an inevitable knock-on effect to the charities applying for this support.

Trusts rely on the income from investments and assets, and with the economic situation as it currently stands they are making little return. Unfortunately this means that charities, which rely so greatly on these donations, are struggling to raise much-needed funds, and can only wait until the economy begins to recover before trusts are in a position to start giving again.

Bath Building Society is bucking the trend by forging ahead with its Charity Awards for 2009, keen to support charities and community groups in and around Bath through a range of small but meaningful contributions.

Building Society Launches Charity Awards 2009
Every year charities and non-profit organisations from the local area are invited by Bath Building Society to submit applications for awards of between £100 and £1,000. Charities may also be allocated tickets for flights in the Society's hot air balloon, which they can auction or raffle to help raise further funds.

The applications are considered by a panel of judges including representatives from Bath Building Society, Eventy - Marketing & PR, the Quartet Community Foundation, the Bath Chronicle, Heart 103 and the Mayor of Bath.

Last year, Positive Action on Cancer, based in Frome, was allocated the Society's top award of £1,000 to cover running costs and room rental, allowing the charity to continue to provide a counseling service for people affected by cancer.

The awards also help smaller groups within the community to help others. Last year, the Society awarded Oldfield Park Community Knitting Group £100 which has helped them to help many others over recent months.

Pat Spreadbury from the group said, "We've done an awful lot with the money we received from Bath Building Society and we've been most grateful. Recently we've knitted hats to send to Tanzania to protect babies from the elements, we've knitted hats and scarves for Operation Christmas Child, and we've also knitted scarves for the Big Issue sellers and coats for their dogs."

The Charity Awards have continued to grow year on year, with 2008 being a record year for the highest number of applications received.

Dick Jenkins, Chief Executive of Bath Building Society said, "Year on year we get more and more applications for the Charity Awards from charities and non-profit organisations working for the benefit of the community, and it reflects the wealth of good work that goes on around us."

"It's always difficult when it comes to the decision making s there re so many worthy causes looking for support, but I would urge any groups out there who are looking for funding of any kind to apply to us for an award."
