City Farm Access Improved Thanks to Bath Building Society

Work has recently been completed to provide disabled access for visitors to Bath City Farm, thanks to a donation from a local building society.

The charity, based on Whiteway, applied for funding through Bath Building Society’s Charity Awards scheme last year, and was delighted to receive financial support enabling them to improve access for disabled visitors, including wheelchair users.

Bath City Farm welcomes approximately 300 guests every week, as well as around 50 volunteers, and has regular visits from children attending Threeways – a local school for children with special needs. Limited disabled access has meant that in the past some people have not been able to see the animals and all of the farm’s facilities.

After receiving an application from the charity, the Bath Building Society Charity Awards panel, which includes the Mayor of Bath cllr Colin Barrett, Jilly Edwards from the Quartet Community Foundation, Bath Chronicle Editor Sam Holliday, and the Society’s Chief Executive Dick Jenkins, decided to award Bath City Farm the funding they needed to complete the works.

Sarah Walker, Chair of Bath City Farm said, “These access improvements make a massive difference to staff, volunteers and our visitors. It’s important that everyone who visits has the same opportunity to see the whole farm, so we’re extremely grateful to Bath Building Society for this donation.”

“The work itself was carried out by our volunteers, some of whom are service users from the mental health charity MIND, some are from the probation service and some are unemployed, so it was a real community project.”

“I would like to thank Bath Building Society for its generous support, and also our volunteers for all of their hard work.”

Dick Jenkins
, Chief Executive of Bath Building Society added, “When we launched the Awards in 2006, it was our aim to make contributions that would make a real difference to as many people across the City as possible.  We’re delighted to have been able to support Bath City Farm. The charity plays a very important role within the community, and we’re pleased that now the facilities can be enjoyed by all.”

“I can imagine that children with disabilities who will use the new path, will get great pleasure from getting up close to the animals. We’re pleased to be part of the evolving story of this charity and we wish them every success.”
