Entries Roll in for Poster Competition
Potential Picassos and budding Banksys in and around Bath have been showing off their artistic talents in this year's Bath Rotary Club Firework Safety Poster Competition.
The competition, which has become an institution in the city since it started in 1972, is sponsored by Bath Building Society and attracts thousands of entries every year.
Many schools in and around Bath take part in the competition which is open to children aged between four and 16. This year thousands of entries were received through Bath Building Society's branches and agencies.
The judging will take place on Friday 23rd October at Bath Fire Station. The panel of judges includes Brian Wafer from Avon Fire and Rescue, Chief Executive of Bath Building Society Dick Jenkins, Editor of the Bath Chronicle Sam Holliday, President of Bath Rotary Mike Knight, Roger McSweeney from Bath 41 Club and the Mayor of Bath Cllr Colin Barrett.
The posters will be judged in four age categories: 4-5; 6-7; 8-9; and over 10's. There will be a separate category for children attending special schools in the area, as well as a prize for the overall winner.
Judges will be looking at the safety message and artistic content of the posters. There will be winners in each age category, with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize in each. A prize giving ceremony will be held at the Mayor's Parlour at the Guildhall on Friday 30th October.
Winners will receive a Bath Building Society 'Futurebuilder' token worth £25, £15 or £10. The overall winner will receive a token for £25.
This year, the winner along with 23 other finalists will also be invited along to the opening of phase one of the new Southgate development on 4th November, the day before the city's annual firework display. Some of the lucky entrants will even have their designs displayed on the hoardings around the new development.
Bath Rotary Club's firework display is being held on Thursday 5th November at The Rec. It is Bath's only city centre firework display, and tickets are now on sale at all Bath Building Society offices at the reduced rate of £4 for adults and £1 for children.
