Woodland Access Improved Thanks to Building Society Grant

Access to a popular woodland walk in Bath has been improved and made safe thanks to a donation from Bath Building Society.

Earlier this year, Primrose Hill Community Woodland Trust applied for a grant through the Bath Building Society Charity Awards scheme, asking for help to allow them to divert rainwater running through the Fonthill Road entrance to the woodland.

The woodland is situated on Primrose Hill on land between Lansdown and Weston, and has far reaching views across the city.

The application was carefully considered by a panel of judges, including Mayor of Bath Colin Barrett, Bath Chronicle Editor Sam Holliday, Jilly Edwards from the Quartet Foundation and Chief Executive of Bath Building Society, Dick Jenkins.

It was decided to award the Primrose Hill Community Woodland Trust a grant to cover the costs of the remedial works, and in October trustees were presented with a cheque from the Society allowing them to get the wheels in motion.

The works were officially completed in early December much to the delight of trustees and visitors to the woodland.

Alastair MacKichan, Trustee for Primrose Hill Community Woodland Trust, said, “Rainwater was eroding the main pathway into the woodland originally constructed by our volunteers, and the entrance to the woodland needed to be made safe.”

“We were delighted to receive the grant from Bath Building Society to allow us to carry out the works, and were pleased to have the work completed so quickly. We are also very grateful to Kingswood School for their co-operation and help in carrying out this project. It means that it is now safer and easier for visitors to appreciate the beautiful woodlands and stunning views over the Christmas and New Year period, and beyond.”

The Trust estimates there are over 1,000 visitors to the woodland each week, most of whom enter via Fonthill Road.

Dick Jenkins, Chief Executive of Bath Building Society, visited the woodland last week to see the improvements.

He said, “It was evident that this was a project that would benefit many people for years to come, and we were only too pleased to be able to fund the necessary remedial works to improve the access.”

“We’re sure that the improvements will allow many people to access the woodland safely and easily, and to appreciate all of the hard work the Primrose Hill Community Woodland Trust has carried out in creating such a wonderful haven for wildlife.”

The woodland was created to celebrate the Millennium. Overlooking the city, Primrose Hill is accessible all year round to people of all ages who want to visit, and, because it is completely enclosed by deer fencing, is particularly popular with dog walkers.
